Underappreciated….
Listening to my iTunes on random tonight after updaing to OS X 10.4.7…. I realized that there’s an 80’s artist that I REALLY like but never really admitted it before… Maybe “admitted it” isn’t the right phrase, but I just didn’t realize how much I liked this guy.
Kenny Loggins. OK, he’s not specifically an 80’s artist, in fact, Loggins and Messina started back in the 70’s… but my GOD this man has made some great songs! I mean everyone knows “Danger Zone” from Top Gun, and “I’m Alright” from CaddyShack, and “Footloose” from… well… Footloose! But think about it, “Whenever I call you Friend” with Stevie Nicks; “This is It” with Michael McDonald singing backup; “Meet me half Way;” and if there was EVER a better “power ballad” than “Forever,” I’ve not heard it!
I’ve got a friend who knows Kenny personally, and I’ve really got to thank HER for kind of opening my eyes to Kenny’s music again. She’s going to California next week to see him live at the California Bowl, too… have fun Stacy!!
–From Danny’s Song–
Love the girl who holds the world in a paper cup, drink it up,
Love her and she’ll bring you luck.
And if you find she helps your mind, buddy, take her home,
Don’t you live alone, try to earn what lovers own.

Well….thanks for the plug for Kenny, Grant!!
Kenny is so very talented, to this day. He’s continued to release albums (working on a new one right now, to be out before the end of the year), has made a couple of platinum-selling children’s albums, released a Christmas album with some beautiful songs of his own as well as standards, and got back together with Jimmy Messina last year for a long awaited reunion tour.
“This Is It” was co-written with Michael McDonald (they still collaborate) and won a Grammy. They also co-wrote “What A Fool Believes”, recorded by both Kenny and the Doobie Brothers, which also won a Grammy.
“Danny’s Song” (the lyrics you quote) was written for Kenny’s brother when Dan announced he and his wife were expecting their first baby. It was before Kenny made it big and as he says, “I had to give them a gift and I was poor, so I wrote the song.” What a gift!
Actually, my favorite Loggins songs are not his hits. I’ll send you some of MY favorites to see what you think.
The best thing about Kenny is what a great guy he is, despite his fame and all that comes with it. He super smart, very funny and a joy to be around. I’ve known him all my life, since he is a friend of my dad’s, and he has remained very grounded.
Thanks again for your “admition”, and also for allowing me to add my 2 cents.
Stacy
Its odd because last weekend I was listning to my Zen Creative MP3 on ramdom and “This is it” came on. I started woundering if Kenny was still out there playing. Im glad he still is!
Other song that came up on my MP3 were: “Bluer than Blue” by ?
“Catch my fall” by Billy Idol and “All through the Night” by Cindy Lauper
Oh and “Rainning Blood” by Slayer”
Peace!
Grant,
This is so funny. “Meet Me Halfway” which is a favorite song of mine, was playing at Bowling Green Meijers last night. But what is even funnier, is that it was mine and Kelley Roby’s “SONG”. There is a dumb story behind the choosing of that song to be “our theme”.
D
Ok, now this is really weird! Footloose just happened to be playing while I was reading this – what are the odds?!?!
Judging from the responses, the here-to-fore unknown powers of Kenny are strong…. VERY strong!! 🙂
